Saint Etienne Cathedral

Listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, Saint Etienne Cathedral, dedicated to the first Christian martyr, Saint Etienne, was built between the end of the XII century and the end of the XIII century. A masterpiece of gothic art, remarkable for its size and the uniformity of its design, the building is a testament to the power of Christianity in medieval France. Its tympanum, sculptures and stained glass windows are particularly outstanding. The cathedral’s most extraordinary features are the perspective of the lateral walls and the uniformity of the interior space. The sculptures at the north and south doors, the tympanum at the Last Judgement portal (in the centre of the western façade), as well as the remains of the sculpted rood, are fine examples of gothic art. The Saint-Etienne cathedral is a jewel to discover during your stay in Bourges.
